4 Things to meditate on this Palm Sunday
- Why the palm branch? The palm branch represented goodness and victory and was symbolic of the final victory Jesus would soon fulfill over death.
- Why did Jesus choose a donkey? Jesus choosing to ride in on a donkey directly fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9. The donkey symbolized peace. Those who chose to ride them showed that they came with peaceful intentions. Even with the animal he chose to ride into the city on this special day showed us that He is the Prince of Peace.
- What did it mean when the people shouted “Hosanna”? That showed they were hailing Jesus as Christ the King. That word means “save now.” Even though in their minds they were waiting for a king of this earth, God had a different plan to bring true salvation to all who trust in Him.
- Jesus wept for Jerusalem. In the midst of being praised and hailed as king, He knew in His heart that wouldn’t be the case for very long. The reality is the same people who would hail him as king today, would change their minds in just a few days. They would turn their backs on Him, betray Him, and crucify Him. It broke His heart with the reality of how much they needed a Savior.
Palm Sunday reminds us that the reign of Christ is far greater than anything the mind of man could ever conceive or plan. Man looked for someone to fight their battles in the present day world. Yet God had the ultimate plan of sending His Son to fight the final battle over death. Because of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, we can be set free of death.
As we continue throughout this week, please take time each day to meditate on what happened that day, what Jesus said or went through, and how it affects you today. Please read along with the scriptures provided. We encourage you to create a group conversation with your Sunday School to talk about what God is revealing to you this week.
